Match Reports for 2007
27/01/2007 - Cornwall & Devon - Perranporth 11 v St Austell 11
Honours were even in this bottom of the table clash between the Brewers & the Saints who both fielded their full sides for this match which was sponsored by David Penington Accountant.  St Austell had the brighter start with a deluge of attacking play taking it straight to the Perranporth defence.  A try from Peter Winterbottom and two penalties from Ian (Syd) Venner early in the first half left the bumber Brewers crowd wondering if it was going to be another bleak afternoon after seeing the Saints camped in the home sides half. If not for try saving tackles from Centre partnership Adie Matthews and Justyn Irons the 0-11 deficite could have been bigger after 40 minutes. Coach Steve Caruana had some choice words at half time and the Perranporth came out with renewed purpose.  The forwards soon started to cross the gain line with strong drives from Captain & No 8 Gareth Blake and stalwart props Neil Gregory & Angus Wright. All action Flanker and top try scorer Danny Wallis was brought on as a substitue and made an instant impact to the homes sides scrum.  Perranporth were awarded a sucession of scrums on the S Austellt 5 metre line but the Referee decided not to award a penalty try despite the scrum being collapsed on several occassions when over the try line.  Perranporth then took the option to spin the ball out wide and winger Matt Moncaster made the most of some tight space and crossed for the unconverted try. Perranporth came away having the best of the play with a much improved performance but still a point behind St Austell at the bottom of the table.
10/01/2007 - Skinners Cornwall County Cup - Perranporth 5 v Truro 22
Underdogs Perranporth were always going to find it difficult to overcome their Higher league City neighbours Truro in this quarter final final of the Skinners Brewery Cup at the Ponsmere. Early try 5 minutes in sent Truro 2nd row Alwin through Perran defence from 10 metres out. Truro had the better of the first quarter with determined play from their pack and intelligent field kicking from Fly Half Ross Martin. Despite a 2nd converted try from Truro’s Joe Williamson and a penalty from Martin. The Perranporth pack as they have done all season matched their higher league opponents in the tight, not least was the dual between brother Sam (Truro) and Ben (Perranporth) Parker both playing in the 2nd row for their respective clubs. The 2nd half Perran started to dominate up front, but with the unfortunate lose No 8 Gareth Blake to the sin-bin, Truro capitalised on the extra man and exploited the gap in mid field to send flanker Shaun Rosevear through for Truros final converted try. With the substitute winger, Matt Trevail from the bench Perran showed signs of good attacking play. Centre and Captain Gareth Stock, provided some telling runs at the young Truro defence, after returning from shoulder injury. The Perran team must have been watching the Pirates the night before as their whole backline joined a rolling maul at the death to earn a consolation try with Gavin Doyle popping up with the ball to claim the try. The final score being 5-22. Perranporth would like to thank tournament sponsors Skinners Brewery for hosting the event and the match officials from CRFU in ensuring an enjoyable local derby. Perranporth RFC would like to wish Truro continued success for the next round. Perranporth are back to league action next week travelling to Okehampton whilst Truro entertain Tiverton both sides hoping for a much needed league win.
